Royal Selangor 015504 Lewis Chess Set

Our Lewis chess set offers a remarkable replica of the walrus-ivory originals from the British Museum's collection. The sets depict a variety of characters, with the king sitting firmly with a sword symbolizing justice. The queen stands with a sign of kindness, and the bishops, knights, and fierce berserker rooks all in full regalia. Meanwhile, the pawns are represented by upright slabs decorated with elaborate scrollwork. Both sides of the game are crafted from pewter, one with a polished shine and the other in a dark matt finish. On the chessboard of Nyatoh, the interwoven knot motif from the king's throne scorch the board. Originally found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, these 12th century Lewis chessmen of Scandinavian origin are intricate and impressive; of the 78 pieces known today, the British Museum's own 67 are a sought after sight.About the collectionA project with the British Museum, this collaboration draws on the public institution’s vast collection of over 8 million artefacts, documenting the story of human culture from its earliest days to the present.
