Antique Hatpin
Description and Notes:  "Sweetheart" hat pins were proudly worn in honor of the ladies' husband, father, son, brother, and beau who served in the military of various nations, especially during the time of war. The buttons were part or their uniform, and easily recognized by friends, relatives, military personnel, and neighbors.  It was a sensitive way to keep their loved ones close to them when their men were far away.

  • The North Somerset Yeomanry was a part-time cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1798 to 1967. The North Somerset Yeomanry was formed as a cavalry regiment in 1798. Known as the Frome and Selwood Volunteers the regiment had the job of protecting towns and villages in the event of an invasion by Napoleon. By 1817, a number of small cavalry regiments had joined and the regiment was renamed the North Somerset Yeomanry.
  • From its birth until 1900, the North Somerset Yeomanry was a purely localized force. It was a forerunner to our modern day Territorial Army, with training and operations taking part on a localized basis. However, the Yeomanry differed from the county militia; the militia would only ever be a home force whereas there was always a possibility that the Yeomanry could be ordered to service abroad. This occurred in 1900 with the Boer War. It was the first British campaign to involved the mobilisation of Yeomanry forces. Joining the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry the regiment took part in several small skirmishes and formed bodyguards. In 1901 in recognition of its services during the war, the name of the regiment changed to the North Somerset Imperial Yeomanry. In 1908, on the formation of the Territorial Force, the name reverted to the North Somerset Yeomanry.
