Clarence Arthur Ellsworth, a true frontier spirit, was born in the heart of Holdrege, Nebraska in 1885 and concluded his remarkable journey in Los Angeles, California, in 1961. Hailing from a pioneering background, Clarence's life began in his father's drug store, where he was born prematurely and brought into the world with a whiskey rub and a warm oven. As a witness to the fading era of the "horse-drawn Westward migration," he developed a deep connection to the landscapes and peoples of the American West. Self-taught as a painter, he honed his skills during a decade as a newspaper artist in Denver, where he gained recognition for his evocative depictions of Western subjects. His talents extended to the creation of captivating covers and illustrations for Eastern magazines and portraits at Colorado Springs' Garden of the Gods. In 1924, he made the pivotal move to Hollywood, California, where he lent his artistic prowess to the silver screen as a motion picture title artist. Ellsworth's artistic repertoire expanded to include the illustration of Western books, with a notable focus on Native American culture and the magnificence of horses. By 1941, he was gracing the galleries of the Southwest Museum with his one-man exhibitions, solidifying his place in the annals of Western art history. Clarence Arthur Ellsworth's legacy, once undervalued, now stands as a treasure trove for collectors and enthusiasts alike, and his enduring passion for capturing the essence of the West continues to captivate hearts and minds.
