A vintage photograph of the WW1 battlefield which bears the ink stamp of the Imperial War Museum to the rear.

It shows casualties awaiting burial at WINDMILL BRITISH MILITARY CEMETERY, MONCHY-LE-PREUX on the 29th August 1918 during the 100 DAYS CAMPAIGN. Some of the soldiers are still lying on field stretchers, and others already have wooden crosses placed on them ready for burial.

The image has been produced using original BRITISH OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH negatives from the museum's archives, and the ink stamp to the rear contains a telephone dialling code '01' which dates the stamp to between 1958 and 1990. Therefore, it would seem that the photo is anywhere between 34 and 66 years old.

Given the subject matter, and the effect it could have on morale, it is likely that the image was not circulated to the public during the War.

Measures approximately 20cm x 15cm (8" x 6").
