Enamel Porcelain differ in many ways from oil paintings. Rather than canvas, enamel provides support for the picture. Finely powdered glass particles are applied in individual colors to the enamel then they are fired in a kiln. As many as thirty to forty firings are needed to complete a full-size painting. Each color fuses at a different temperature. Careful control of heat and firing times are required to prevent the mingling of adjacent colors and and any over-burn. Enameling is an ancient, unusual, and time-consuming process dating back to the Sixth Century B.C.
