Designating Flag of Michigan’s First Light Artillery Battery “H” Guidon
The 1st Michigan Light Artillery Regiment was an artillery regiment from Michigan that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Battery “H” was also known as the 8th Battery Michigan Light Artillery. The unit also went by the name De Golyer’s Battery for its commander, Captain Samuel De Golyer. Battery “H” was organized in Monroe, Michigan. The men were mustered into service on March 6, 1862, and mustered out on July 22, 1865. “Designating flags” identified the command headquarters of army units. They were often swallowtail guidons or pennants like this. Their symbols and colors identified the brigade, division, corps, and army of the command headquarters.
This is a reproduction of the Battery “H” flag of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery. The actual dimensions and materials are not the same as the original flag.
