At 107, Leon Lacroix (1909-2016) of Beligum was considered one of the longest-lived professional numismatists. He had studied in Paris under the French numismatists Charles Picard and Louis Robert, and wrote dozens of articles and several books on Greek iconography and other topics in Greek history. He was a member of the French School of Archaeology in Athens and earned his PhD at the University of Liege, where he was a professor of Greek archaeology and art history until 1980. Perhaps his most important work is 'Les reproductions de statues sur les monnaies grecques: la statuaire archaique et classique' (Liege, 1949), which examines the images used on Greek coinage.
