These are provided as hand cut dowels NOT plugs. A dowel has the same diameter at both ends. A plug is narrower at one end than the other.

Each dowel is cut using a diamond hole saw from reclaimed teak offcuts from making our new swim deck. The teak originally came from a 1960s ocean liner. It was laid onto a metal deck using pitch. We have cleaned the timbers as shown in the pictures to remove the pitch and remove the first one or two millimeters of timber to provide a decent timber for us to make a new deck around 30mm deep . However it can be seen that the pitch has leeched into the timber from below and from above the timber is quite dark. The centre is therefore paler for obvious reasons.

The marks on the side of the dowel are primarily burn marks from the cutting tool.

The timber as shown is around 30-32mm deep. The plugs are cut with a cutter that provides as maximum depth of 25mm but when cut out some may well be lost in the cut so a maximum dowel depth of 20mm should be expected. Dowels are always cut from the top of the timber down to the base so it the 5-7mm of base (where the pitch was) that is offcut in this process.

The dowels are cut to order and will take 1-2 days to do and ship but to be safe I have placed a 5 day shipping time on orders

Dowels can be cut to almost any size.

The ones in the pictures above have a 12mm, 14mm, 18mm, 22mm and a 27mm diameter

The ones on the board are 11mm, 13mm, 17mm, 22mm, 25mm, 27mm, 28mm, 36mm, 41mm, 46mm diameter

To make a dowel into a plug simply sand one end either using a fixed sander eg rotary or belt or a hand held finger sander.

Ensure to specify a dowel the correct size for your hole. eg a hole of 25mm diamter will require a dowel of 26-27mm diameter by the time it is sanded to a plug shape.

If fitting to a deck then the dowel should be shaped to a plug and then inserted with West System or similar. The plug should fit snuggly but not be hammered home too hard else the plank may split over time. It should be proud of the deck to allow sanding. Do not cut the dowels too thin. A good depth of plug will resist coming out once the epoxy looses its grip (which they all do) after 3-5 years

Pretty much any quantity can be provided though I have listed packs of 10

To be clear:

1. These are hand cut and may not be perfectly straight as the cutter may have gone in at a slight angle and the reclaimed wood is a non-uniform medium.
2. These are provided as dowels not plugs
3. These are reclaimed teak not modern Iroko
