Beautiful antique Edwardian Art Nouveau pendant brooch crafted from burnished 9ct yellow gold and featuring a brilliant, round faceted central as the central feature, with four smaller stones set at the compass points. The stylish gold frame, so typical of the period with its art nouveau curves and flourishes, is also set with delicate, natural seed pearls.

The piece is stamped for 9ct gold twice on the reverse, but there are no maker’s marks/hallmarks which is not unusual for jewels from this date. This is a versatile piece as it can be worn with a chain as a pendant but as shown here, can also be worn as a brooch when attached to the later gold bar, marked HG & S for Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd, the renowned British manufacturing jeweller and with a Birmingham hallmark dated to the 1940’s. Pendant measures 4cms in height including bale and 2.8cms in width. Bar is L2.9cms x 0.4cms. Total weight is 2.9g.

Amethyst is a variety of quartz, with various hues from lilac to deep purple and it has captivated mankind for centuries, with the stone found in the collections of royal families throughout Europe and Asia, with Catherine the Great of Russia particularly fond of the gemstone.

Amethyst is also the gem traditionally given for the sixth wedding anniversary as well as being the birthstone for the month of February. This would be a much-appreciated and highly appropriate present gifted on either occasion.
