Beatrix Potter's "Tailor of Gloucester" story (published in 1901) was on a tale about a real tailor in Gloucester called John Prichard (1877–1934) who was commissioned to make a suit for the new Mayor of Gloucester.  On the Saturday, Pritchard left the suit cut out ready to start sewing on the following Monday morning.  But when he came in on the Monday the suit was finished apart from an unfinished buttonhole with a note attached saying 'No more twist'. His assistants had worked through the night to finish the suit but Pritchard was keen to encourage a tale that fairies had done the work and the incident became a local legend.  Beatrix Potter heard about this story when staying with her cousin in Gloucestershire and was inspired to re-work the story for a young friend, Freda Moore, using mice not human assistants to finish the suit.
