EARLY Cincinnati Museum Association silver gelatin photograph of then (French) Congo grass cloth on the loom. Lengthy period notations attribute the pictured weaving to Carl Steckelmann whose collection the museum acquired in 1889. 



Steckelmann is considered the first American to finance his trips to Africa through lectures & the exportation of cultural artifacts which, for better or worse, helped to establish the African Art Trade in America.
