Well I'm physics braindead so maybe somebody could answer why have the pipes... but I think Aiwa advertised them that the bass resonates better through a long hollow one-way pipe... and that their higher-end models have longer pipe lengths...

Just a theory about the pipes, but maybe it's supposed to work as the sub like on some computer speakers where they have an opening to strengthen the lowest frequencies? Or it could just be a salestrick like "digital headphones"
