Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, Asa "Ace" Powell emerged as a prolific painter renowned for his vivid depictions of western action scenes, wildlife, and Native American figures, embodying the spirit of Charles Russell's tradition. His signature on artworks, an ace of diamonds, aptly became his moniker. A versatile artist, Powell crafted between 12,000 and 15,000 paintings and sculptures, often favoring oil but also excelling in terra cotta, stone, wood, and etching. Amidst a life marked by geographical shifts and personal challenges, including a battle with alcoholism that he eventually conquered, he found his home in Kalispell, Montana. Growing up near Charlie Russell's summer home and learning from Blackfeet Indians, Powell's art was deeply influenced by these connections, often portraying warriors on horseback and cabins in moonlit landscapes. Powell's journey led him through various careers – from cowboy and rancher to stints in the Army and a partnership in the plastic figurine business – until his artistic path was solidified through the Famous Artists correspondence course. His marriage to Nancy McLaughlin and operation of a gallery in Hungry Horse, Montana, added to his artistic legacy, as did his later partnership with Thelma Conner. Ace Powell's artworks, resonating with the stories he grew up hearing, are testament to his enduring connection to Montana's landscapes and the characters who inhabit them.
