I tested this unit to the best of my ability without a remote control, and everything I could see was working.

I hooked it up to my TV with an HDMI cable and the startup screen comes on, but I couldn't make any selections without a remote.   It also identified a DVD I inserted,  but I had no way to start playing it. 

I was able to connect to my laptop with a USB 3.0 cable and it showed up as a 3TB external hard drive.   It is almost full with over 25,000 .VOB files already installed.   I did not have software to pay .VOB files,  so I can't tell you what kind of music it is .
