Foster started the Prince Valiant story as a comic strip in 1937, when "Val" was five years old, connecting his story with the tales of King Arthur. Hastings House published a series of seven hardcover books in the 1950s; this one lists copyrights belonging to the King Features Syndicate, Inc. beginning with 1948 and ending with 1960, presumably the publication date of this book.
