Here is a wonderful and quiet heavy wooden box with wonderful carved detail on the lid and all of the sides.
The top shows two opposing lizard-like dragon creatures with curled tails and a plain central roundel and a textured background.
The two long sides (front and rear) again each show two opposing dragons of a different style, having upturned snouts, which, to me, looks very oriental. The two shorter ands also each show a single dragon, again with the upturned snout.
There is a thin band of lozenge shaped carving all around the box above the level of the dragons, and above this, on the edges of the lid, carving that almost appear to resemble bamboo in its shape.
The inside of the box has a central divider. It could be used for many things, playing cards, cigarettes, jewellery, sewing items – great versatility !
The box measures about 7.9 inches (21 cm), by about 4.8 inches (12.5 cm).
The age of this piece is
uncertain, antique or vintage, but the level of workmanship makes it stand out. The condition is generally very good used vintage, with no chips or cracks.
