Antique Dunn’s Model Eye

Made in England c.1910
By F Davidson, 29 Great Portland Street, London.

A near complete set of “Dunn’s Model Eye” or “Skiascopic Model Eye”.
Model eyes were used by students to practise skills of ophthalmoscopy and retinoscopy.
This set consist of an artificial eye, 3 lenses (would originally have had 6) and 17 different hand painted retinae illustrating various pathological conditions.  All held in snap closing wooden case, covered in black leatherette and lined with blue velvet.
The artificial model eye a rotating wheel with 3 different sized holes simulating the pupil diameter. There are two slots for lenses on the front of the “eye”. The retinae can be slotted into the back. Students could then use a retinoscope to study the model retina.

Marked on inside of lid: “F.DAVIDSON & Co, 29 GREAT PORTLAND STREET, LONDON, W DUNN'S MODEL EYE”
Marked on the artificial eye: “F.DAVIDSON & Co, London” and “E”. The retinae are numbered “E1” to “E17”.
The lenses are inscribed with numerals indicting the type/strength of the lenses.

Box measures approx.. 15 x 10 x 6 cm.

Condition is good for age. One of the retinae is detached from its holder, but is present and should be easily glued into place. Some of the others have some staining as shown. As mentioned above three of the lenses are missing. The eye has some wear commensurate with age. The box has some marks, wear and damage to the leatherette as shown.
