About the artist:

Ikuo Hirayama (平山 郁夫, 15 June 1930 – 2 December 2009) was a Japanese Nihonga painter and educator. Born in Setoda-chō, Hiroshima Prefecture, he was famous in Japan for Silk Road paintings of dreamy desert landscapes in Iran, Iraq, and China.

He produced a series of paintings depicting the introduction of Buddhism to Japan. A hibakusha, he portrayed the A-bomb attack on Hiroshima. He was also active in the preservation of the cultural heritage of the world (e.g., the Bamiyan Buddhas) and is internationally appreciated for his efforts in this sphere. Hirayama was awarded the French Légion d'honneur Order in 1996 and Japan's Order of Cultural Merit in 1998 amongst others. He was the President of the Tokyo University of fine Arts and Music and President of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO.

About the fans:

This is one of a large collection of vintage fans we have acquired that were stock from an old fan shop in Kyoto. They are the printed, washi-paper type that Japanese women carry with them in warm weather. They are very intricately hand-made and have floral or nature motifs on one side and are blank on the back. Some have strings with a bead. The bamboo struts are a natural, un-lacquered die-cut design. Most are unused but as they have been stored for many years, may have discoloration or other issues from age. We have multiples of some of the designs and the listing will indicate this. See photos for other details.

Note:

These are all vintage items and we examine them carefully to determine their price according quality and condition. Most were produced in the 1960’s - 1980’s but some are newer. Some are unused, like new or have stains or other damage so examine the photos and read the description carefully before purchasing to determine the exact condition of this particular item and it’s value to you.
