El Camino de Santiago: A Pilgrim’s Journey

El Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James,

is a historic pilgrimage route leading to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain.

Believed to mark the resting place of Saint James (Santiago),

the pilgrimage has been a spiritual journey since the 9th century.

Routes and Experience

The most traveled route, the Camino Francés, starts in the French Pyrenees

and covers about 800 km (500 miles). Pilgrims walk, cycle,

or ride horseback through diverse landscapes and historic towns.

Other routes include the Camino del Norte and the Camino Portugués.

Significance

Pilgrims undertake the journey for spiritual growth, personal reflection,

or challenge. They stay in pilgrim hostels, collect stamps in their passports,

and participate in communal traditions. Reaching Santiago’s Cathedral

and attending Mass is a key moment, often receiving a certificate called the "Compostela."

Legacy

Today, El Camino de Santiago remains a major pilgrimage

and cultural heritage site, attracting thousands each year

and celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
