Hedwig Francillo-Kauffmann [1] (born Hedwig Clementine Franz(e)l [2] , stage name Francillo Kauffmann , married name de Souza Guimarães , born September 30, 1878 [3] in Vienna , died April 11, 1948 in Rio de Janeiro [4] ) was an Austrian soprano.

She was born on September 30, 1878 as the illegitimate child of the domestic worker Maria Franzl (born November 30, 1856 in Vienna- Braunhirschen ) in Ober Sankt Veit . Eleven years later, the caretaker of the Postal Savings Bank Karl Kaufmann (June 27, 1854–July 10, 1925 [5] [6] ) was registered as the child's father. The parents had previously married on November 18, 1889. [7] She studied opera singing with Franziska Mutters (who was a good friend of Arthur Schnitzler ) in Vienna, [8] with Aglaja Orgéni in Dresden and in Milan . She made her debut in the 1898/1899 season when she was at the StadttheaterStettin was engaged. 1899-1902 she was engaged at the Wiesbaden Court Theater , 1902/1903 at the Munich Court Theater , 1903-1908 at the Berlin Court Opera and Komische Oper. From 1908 to the end of the 1912 season she worked at the Vienna Court Opera. In 1909 she appeared here together with Enrico Caruso . [9] At the end of her work at this house, she was appointed Kammersängerin . 1912-1917 she was at the Stadttheater Hamburg . Here she married the Brazilian diplomat Wenceslau Souza-Guimarães in July 1916. [10] Immediately after her marriage, she dedicated the animal drinking fountain she had donatedin Vienna, which at that time was still positioned behind the Secession , but has since been moved. [11] In the years that followed her marriage, she only appeared on guest performances and concert tours. In 1921 she visited Brazil with her husband and a two-year-old son - also Wenceslau. [12] In 1927 she lived as a teacher in Berlin . In Salomon Wininger 's Greater Jewish National Biography , Volume 3, 1928, p . 426 [13]she is listed as a Jewess. That may be the reason why she was stateless in 1938 – her husband had died and she continued to live in Berlin – and had to endure the increasing harassment of the Jewish population, even though the Brazilian ambassador stood up for her. [14] The following year she accepted an appointment to the Mozarteum in Salzburg , where she began teaching on April 15, 1939. [15] On October 10, 1947 she emigrated to Rio de Janeiro [16] to her son. She died there the following year
