Jason, a veteran builder whose father is Fender's legendary R&D staff member Dan Smith, grew up surrounded by Fender products. Jason was born in Rochester, New York, and grew up in California, saying, "I've been fascinated by Fender's craftsmanship since I was a child, partly because of my father's work."
I witnessed great musicians such as Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck, and Robben Ford come to visit my father from an early age. My first big concert experience was when I went to see Rush when I was 6 years old. I still remember visiting Geddy Lee's dressing room with my dad after the show. Jason recalls that he grew up in a privileged environment where he experienced many concerts by major artists such as Pink Floyd and ZZ Top even before he was a teenager.
Jason joined CustomShop in 1995, having spent his youth absorbing rock music and Fender culture. After studying under the famous Senior MasterBuilder John English for five years, he was promoted to MasterBuilder in 2006.
While I was involved in making various guitars under John English, one of the guitars that left a particularly strong impression on me was the double-neck Stratocaster that I made for Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo. Since then, he has created numerous instruments for artists such as John 5, Michael Landau, Flea, Josh Klinghoffer, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, Reggie Hamilton, Linkin Park, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Neon Trees.
This is a 61 Stratocaster with a beautiful quarter-sawn maple neck and lightweight alder body. The neck shape is a slightly slender C shape. The black rosewood fingerboard has a 7.25 radius, and despite the high vintage fret specifications, you can enjoy a traditional playing feel that sticks to your hand.
The pickups are equipped with three '60s STRATs manufactured by Custom Shop, which match well with the clear sound character unique to maple necks, and output a beautiful Strat sound with a sublimated dark impression that blends well with ensembles.
Due to the condition of this individual, it is not possible to identify new scratches as it was originally a relic finished individual. Manufactured in 2009, looking at the condition of the frets, it seems like it has been used with care. Of course, there are no problems with the electrical system or the playing surface, and the frets are about 70% intact with no dents, so you can use this as a guitar that you can use a lot. The coexistence of the playability and vintage feel that could only be achieved because I am a player myself is wonderful, and it is truly a supreme piece that can only be enjoyed by a master builder.
