THE SUBJECT - The sculpture depicts Artemis, goddess of virginity, hunting and the woods, in the act of wearing the gift of her devotees. The head is turned slightly to the right, but the goddess does not pay attention to what she is doing. On the contrary, her gaze turns to the environment around her, a typical characteristic of classical statues. ARTEMIS is the archer goddess who lives with the nymphs in the woods, a symbol of freedom, sisterhood and the ability to achieve one's goals.
Gabi's DIANA or Artemis is one of the most iconic representations of the goddess. The original white marble statue is attributed to Praxiteles. It was discovered in 1792 in the properties of Prince Marcantonio IV Borghese near Rome, where the city of Gabi stood in ancient times. A few years later, due to financial difficulties, the prince's successors were forced to sell 344 works from the Borghese collection to France. Since then, Diana has been exhibited at the Louvre.
