VINTAGE LOT OF 4 CHINA PORCELAIN BAVARIA GERMANY TOOTHPICK HOLDERS HAND PAINTED

Here we have the start of a wonderful little porcelain or china toothpick holder collection, with four pieces for one price.  The four are as follows, described left to right in the 1st photo:  1.) A beautiful little round shape ceramic toothpick holder with a flared top rim and sitting on eight tiny feet.  It is decorated with a colonial couple in period dress (transfer) and has gold trim to the top rim and to the feet.  It is unsigned and probably dates to the 2nd half of the 20th century.  It is in excellent to near mint original condition.  There is only some very slight wear to the gold trim on the top rim.  2.) This one is a simple tapered cylinder shape.  It is decorated with hand painted gold trim on an off-white colored background and has a semi-glossy finish.  It is signed on the underside in green ink underglaze “J & C Bavaria” under a floral trademark.  According to the book Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present by Robert E. Rontgen this is the mark of Jaeger, Thomas & Co who were in business from 1898-1902, so this piece dates to circa 1898-1902.  A toothpick holder with what appears to be the same shape as this one is pictured in the book China Toothpick Holders by Judy Knauer & Sandra Raymond in Figure 15 in the middle.  It is in excellent to near mint original condition.  There is only some very slight wear to the gold trim.  3.)  A beautiful little round shape toothpick holder decorated with hand painted blue flowers and accompanying greenery around the base over a cream-colored background that are all 100% hand painted.  There is hand-painted gold trim all around the top rim and the toothpick holder has an overall semi-gloss finish.  It is signed on the underside in green ink underglaze (along with the round “HR” trademark) “Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria.”  According to the book Kovels’ New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery & Porcelain 1850 To the Present by Ralph & Terry Kovel this Hutschenreuther round “HR” trademark would have been in use from 1887, and this one probably dates to circa 1900-1920.  A toothpick holder of this exact shape is pictured in the book China Toothpick Holders by Judy Knauer & Sandra Raymond on page19 in Figure 15 on the right (in the Bavaria section), with a different decoration.  It is in excellent to near mint condition except for some wear to the gold decoration on the top rim.  4.) A beautiful piece of early porcelain in the form of a lovely little toothpick holder that is most likely of German origin.  It is decorated with a floral transfer decoration embellished with hand painted gold, pink and green accents.  While I do not see the exact shape of this toothpick holder pictured in the book China Toothpick Holders by Judy Knauer & Sandra Raymond this does resemble many of the German toothpick holders pictured in this book. This piece is unsigned and most likely dates to circa 1890-1910.  It is in very good condition with only wear to the decoration and gold trim.

These were all part of my mother’s toothpick holder collection and according to her records she acquired these between 1976 and 1989.

If you are not familiar with the NTHCS (National Toothpick Holder Collectors’ Society) it is a great organization and you can learn more about them and collecting toothpick holders at their website.

I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.  Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.  However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.  I will get back to you as soon as I am able.  I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

Age and Condition

Dates and condition are shown in the descriptions above.  None of the four have any chips, cracks, or repairs.  Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of these items.  Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.

Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.  It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.

Approximate Dimensions

The tallest one is about 2.5” (6.4 cm) in height.  The largest diameter one is about 2.25” (5.7 cm) across at the widest point.

PAYMENT, SHIPPING, Insurance & PACKAGING

For auctions, if you do not send an instant payment through PayPal, we will send you an invoice within 24 hours of the end of the auction.

PayPal is our preferred method for receiving funds and payment is expected within 3 days of the completion of any auction.  We will normally ship within 1-2 business days of receiving payment in our PayPal account.

Shipment will be via USPS Ground Advantage Mail at no additional shipping cost to the buyer.  A delivery confirmation (provides electronic tracking of the shipment) is included with all domestic shipments paid for through PayPal.  We always do our best to combine shipping costs to save you as much as possible on shipping.  If you want your package insured, you must let us know in advance of payment.

Please take the shipping costs into account when bidding.  If you purchase more than one of our open salt cellars, individual nut dishes or toothpick holders, at the same time, we will refund all but one of the shipping charges that eBay charges you.  If the items are set up as “Free Shipping” and you buy more than one of our open salt cellars, individual nut dishes or toothpick holders at the same time we will refund you $ 4.00 for each piece you buy, after the first one.  Please note: this does not include salt cellars, individual nut dishes or toothpick holders sold in groups; only one (1) $ 4.00 refund in this manner will be issued per each group or lot of pieces sold as a group or lot.

All items will be professionally packaged for maximum protection in shipping.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS

The only form of payment I accept from international buyers is Pay Pal.  No exceptions!

International shipments will encounter longer shipping times due to distance and Customs requirements.  The USPS says 6-10 business days, but it can take longer.    International buyers are responsible for all customs fees, duties, import taxes or other related customs or import charges and all our out-of-pocket costs incurred in the shipment of packages internationally.

International shipment options will be via USPS First Class Mail (when the item being shipped meets the requirements of that service) or Priority Mail when it does not.

DO NOT ask us to show a lesser value on the Customs Forms than the item sold for, or to ship the item purchased item as a gift.  Ebay requires us to report any buyer to them who requests this.

RETURN POLICY

If for some reason you are unhappy with the item you purchased and would like to return it, please contact me within 14 days to discuss the details.  Refunds will be based on the original selling price of the item only and less any fees charged by eBay.  Buyers to pay all shipping costs both ways unless I substantially misrepresented the item or its condition.  Items must be returned within 30 days of you receiving it and in the same condition as originally shipped.
