Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

If you are looking for something a little different for the vintage mic collection then you might want to consider this very unique and desirable Altec 633A model Dynamic microphone manufactured in the 1950's. The mic has a very modern / contemporary design that was a signature part of Altec's line up. It comes with all the accessories shown including the period Atlas desk stand. This 633A model was originally sold by Western Electric in the 1940's before the company became Altec and the same model was sold under their name for about 10 to 15 years before being discontinued.

This mic was called a "salt shaker" due to it's very unique and obvious styling.

Pic # 2 shows both this model and the 632C along with their basic characteristics. The 633A was a basic dynamic mic set at high impedance being completely void of bass like the microphones today and was a great mic for general broadcasting and paging purposes but happens to make for an excellent harp mic today as it has a grittier, old school sound. That being said the microphone no longer works as the element is dead and this should be used for prop, display or repair purposes only.

Pic # 3 shows this very model mic being used in a live performance by The Beatles sometime around the early 1960's.

This mic is being sold for far less than it would be if it was working as it should. I've seen these just the mic alone go for upwards of $450.00 on Ebay and Reverb in great working condition.

You'll notice right away that the 633A is in good overall condition and certainly about average for a 633A though. The mic comes with the original hunter green paint scheme. There are a few very lite scuff marks but no noticeable paint loss. It's free of dents, fractures or corrosion but there is an old decal on the mic that is mostly worn off. I'd rate the condition of the mic a true 6 and the stand an easy 6 + on a scale of 1 - 10. These older mics are usually in very rough physical condition.

The mic comes with an original joint mechanism / adapter and Atlas 6 inch chrome riser that gives you some decent height to work with and allows you to angle the mic back and forth as needed. There is an original 20 inch cable is in very good condition. Soft and pliable and comes with the vintage male Cannon end connector. The cable is properly wired in case you ever plan on replacing the element with something that actually works.

The stand is a period 1950's Atlas DS-5 model model with a cast iron base and an older toggle switch that is no longer wired but could be at some point in time. The stand makes for a very stable platform and compliments the mic. The original paint does show wear but it's not too bad either. The chrome riser shows some lite wear.

The base also has two holes that allow the mics cable to run through keeping it firmly in place. The base still has the 3 original pads that are in very good condition.

The dimensions of the mic with stand are appx 12 1/2 high X 6 wide.

These older Altec model mics seem to be even more collectible than the Shure 55S interestingly enough and harder to come by. They keep rising in value so this is a good investment at the end of the day.
