The Mimbres culture was
an offshoot of the Anasazi who prehistorically inhabited the southwestern
deserts of America from approximately Circa 200 to 1150 A.D. Because of their
geographic isolation their art form took a divergent direction which was exquisite
and wonderful. They are now best known for the fantastic paintings they
rendered on small to medium sized ceramic bowls. This is a detailed replication
of an original bowl upon which is painted a wonderful bug. The replication was
produced using primitive techniques and processes which rendered its surface
with rich fire clouds and a warm smoky patina that can only be obtained from
the use of these traditional methods. Actual Mimbres bowls are rare and mostly
seen in books or upon the shelves of museums. It is a fortunate collector who
can afford an authentic original Mimbres bowl and there are only a few
remaining to be had. These replication
bowls were made in a small studio in the White Mountains of Arizona. If you
appreciate fine art, marvel at rustic workmanship, love archeology, then I
believe you will not be disappointed with "Fantastic Bug" as it
accurately reflects the pottery once made by this prehistoric and now extinct culture,
the Mimbres.
