A mezuzah מְזוּזָה (Hebrew) is a piece of a parchment made from a cattle leather in Handwritten by an observant jew.

On the parchment are written  verses from the Biblical passages in which the use of a mezuzah is commanded (Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and 11:13–21); they also form part of the Shema prayer.

The mezuzah protects the members of the household. 

The jews attached the mezuzah to the right doorpost in every room (except bathrooms and toilets).
