RARE 'LADY LIBERTY' MID to LATE 19TH CENTURY, U.S. CIVIL WAR to U.S. CENTENNIAL PERIOD, AMERICAN FOLK ART, ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE, HAND CARVED, SMALL 8" in HEIGHT, FIGURATIVE WOMAN'S WOODEN BUST, with MATTE, DRY WOOD FINISH & NATURALLY DARKENED WOOD SURFACES, featuring HINGED, PIVOTING HEAD of LADY LIBERTY, with LONG, FLOWING HAIR, PERIOD HEADDRESS, with PERIOD, UPTURNED FRONT
VISOR, WORMHOLES & ATTACHED BACK METAL HANGER for WALL DISPLAY
[For your review & consideration is this very scarce mid to late 19th century, U. S. Civil War to U. S. Centennial period, American folk art, antique primitive, hand carved, figurative wooden sculptural female bust of 'Lady Liberty.' The figure's estate fresh & new to the marketplace. It hasn't been altered or bastardized, meaning it hasn't been 'in-painted,' repaired or otherwise tinkered with. The wood shows evidence & clear signs of being previously handled, with some of the 'highs' of the figurative graphic iconography, now somewhat topped-off & flattened, from most likely the piece being previously rolled or stored face down. Being mindful that this small, 8" in height x 7 1/4" in width antique figurative wood carving is now 140 to 165 years old, the damage & minor wood loss, surface scuffs & shallow abrasions, can be better understood & therefore acceptable to most collectors. What would be most heralded & coveted by collectors of early Americana would be for an antique artifact to be entirely honest, authentic & completely original, with all first generation surfaces, distressed by the effects of previous handling & by of course, time. The figure of 'Lady Liberty' has long, flowing hair & the easily recognizable, period headband with an upturned visor, often bearing a shield with the Stars & Bars of the Union. Her Greco-Roman linen robe is slightly gathered on her shoulders & her chest is bare, covered by an open necked, fine linen blouse. Untouched & absolutely wonderful. These are clearly not just 'kicking-around' out there. Very scarce.]
