A close friend and confidant of Knute Rockne, he dined with him the night before Rockne's infamous plane crash. Notably, he hired Ed Sullivan as a sportswriter early on and mentored "newcomer" Brent Musburger. Later yet he was named a recipient of the J. G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America and was honored in ceremonies at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
