Notes: Collectible first edition, first printing of legendary sports writer Warren Brown's The Chicago White Sox, part of the acclaimed Putnam Sports Series. Per G. P. Putnam's practice of designating first editions, no additional printings indicated on copyright page. Signature unconditionally guaranteed to pass any COA examination. Note that Brown signatures are scarce. Brown covered primarily the Cubs and the White Sox during his over 60-year career. He coined two of perhaps the most famous nicknames in sports for Babe Ruth (The Sultan of Swat) and Red Grange (The Galloping Ghost). A close friend and confidant of Knute Rockne, he dined with him the night before Rockne's infamous plane crash. Notably, he hired Ed Sullivan as a sportswriter early on and mentored "newcomer" Brent Musburger. Later yet he was named a recipient of the J. G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America and was honored in ceremonies at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Illustrated with photos. 248 pp. 8 1/4" x 5 3/4". Tight copy with minimal shelf wear and brightly colored boards. Scarce dust jacket with $3.50 price intact on front flap with small areas of loss to head and tail of spine panel. Internals faintly toned. A unusually presentable copy of an important baseball collectible. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
