Driven 2 Automotive Air Mass Meters

Over the past 30 years, we've been manufacturing premium Mass Air Flow Meters that are available to the worldwide market. All of our MAF's undergo a strict quality control process to ensure their outstanding quality is maintained across the range. All of our Mass Air Flow Meters include a 12-month warranty for peace of mind.

The Mass Air Flow Meter is the device used in many fuel injected engines to measure the amount of air entering the engine so the on-board computer (ECU) can calculate the correct air/fuel mixture ratio to enter into the combustion chambers. Located ahead of the throttle body, the MAF sensor uses a heated wire or filament/film to measure the air flow.

Benefits:

  • 12-month warranty
  • Made with premium quality components
  • ISO/TSO certified and tested
  • Strict quality control program used during manufacture
  • Fast worldwide shipping
  • Seller with proven positive feedback as rated for by thousands of buyers worldwide.

Important

  • When replacing your mass air flow meter, replace your air filter at the same time!
  • Thoroughly clean the air box free from dust, grime and dirt to a smooth and shiny surface.
  • Note that any numbers on the MAF housing you see that start with 'PBT-30' or similar are not actually part numbers, it's the designation for the type of plastic used during manufacture. Real part numbers such as Bosch usually look like 0 280 218 065 and are stamped, etched or located on a sticker.

Vehicle Compatibility

  • If there's a compatibility chart added to this listing, please use it as a guide only and verify fitment by cross-checking the part number on your existing part with the numbers that are stated in the listing title. Also check the cross-reference part numbers in item specifics section.

Faulty Air Flow Meter Symptoms:

  • Reduced drivability, such as the engine cutting out when the engine speed drops. e.g. approaching bends.
  • Loss of power and more turbo lag on turbo applications.
  • Unsteady Idle
  • Excessive black smoke on diesel applications.
  • Reduced fuel economy and lumpy running.
  • Feels like you're hitting the rev limiter early.
  • Error codes pointing to the MAF during a diagnostic scan.

How a Hot Wire Mass Air Flow Sensor Actually Works

A hot wire mass airflow sensor determines the mass of air flowing into the engine’s air intake system. The theory of operation is similar to that of a hot wire anemometer (which determines air velocity). This is achieved by heating a wire suspended in the engine’s intake air stream, like a toaster wire, with either a constant voltage over the wire or a constant current through the wire. The wire's electrical resistance increases as the wire’s temperature increases, which varies the electrical current flowing through the circuit.

According to Ohm's law, when air flows past the wire, the wire cools, decreasing its resistance, which in-turn allows more current to flow through the circuit, since the supply voltage is a constant. As more current flows, the wire’s temperature increases until the resistance reaches equilibrium again. When the current increases or decreases it's proportional to the mass of air flowing past the wire. The integrated electronic circuit converts the proportional measurement into a calibrated signal which is then sent to the ECU for the calculation of fuel injection required.

How a Hot Film Mass Air Flow Sensor Works

The hot film MAF sensor type works somewhat similar to that of a hot wire MAF sensor, but instead it usually outputs a frequency signal. This sensor uses a hot film-grid instead of a hot wire and is commonly found in late 80’s to early 90’s fuel-injected vehicles. The output frequency is directly proportional to the air mass entering the engine. So as mass flow increases so does the frequency.

These sensors tend to cause intermittent problems due to internal electrical failures. The use of an oscilloscope is strongly recommended to check the output frequency of these sensors. Frequency distortion is also common when the sensor starts to fail. Many technicians in the field use a tap test with very conclusive results. Not all HFM systems output a frequency. In some cases, this sensor works by outputting a regular varying voltage signal.

A Word of Warning

There is an increasing number of unbranded aftermarket MAF's coming to the online aftermarket these days, however please don't compare our units with them. There's simply no comparison as many other suppliers have little or no:

  • Quality control program during manufacture (ISO/TSO CERTIFIED)
  • Years of experience and knowledge
  • Any form of guarantee
  • Liability insurance
  • Proven track record

If you'd prefer to have an original equipment manufactured part, please search in our shop or contact us. We are direct distributors for Bosch, VDO, Hella and many other major automotive part brands so we can provide you with any requirements.
