Rare 1977 sandglow yellow Leyland Princess 2200HL manual, 80,110 miles.

Listed for sale again after "allendennikki" clicked on Buy-It-Now to secure the sale for £4,500 and exclude any other potential buyers, and then tried to haggle the price down to £3,000 when he visited to view and collect the Princess 3 weeks later (after wasting over 45 minutes of tyre-kicking and looking for faults). Mark, I wish you the best of luck in finding any other Princess in sandglow yellow and within your £3,000 budget, let alone a six cylinder :-)

This Leyland wedge has the superbly smooth and torquey straight six cylinder 2227 cc engine, coupled to a 4 speed manual gearbox driving the front wheels. We have owned the car for 5.5 years, during which time we have driven only 2,900 miles at an average of 25.08 mpg - and because we have several other classic and vintage cars in addition to our daily drivers, we have only driven less than 200 miles in the Princess in the last 2 years, so it is now being offered for sale to someone else who can use and enjoy it more (although I know that I will regret this in later years, since it is becoming harder and harder to find a good Princess 2200 now).
The car is one of only about 30 Leyland Princesses left on the roads, and believed to be the last remaining survivor with this specification (sandglow yellow Princess 2200HL manual).

The Princess had 6 previous owners and was restored about 8 years ago, after which it appeared in a five page feature "Guide to Buying a Princess or Ambassador" in the July 2018 edition of Practical Classics magazine (a well used copy will be supplied with the car), and it featured again in the article "Six steps to buying a Leyland Princess" in Classic Cars magazine (18th May 2022). It is also featured as the cover photo on Wiki under Princess.

Being 47 years old (first registered on 10th March 1977), the car is registered as Historic, so it is MOT, road tax and ULEZ exempt. It is also eligible for cheap classic car insurance (I pay only £71 per year for fully comprehensive cover). The seats are very comfortable and covered in a brown velour, so they don't get hot in summer or cold in winter.

The downside are a few areas where it is starting to show its age ....
1) the chrome on the rear bumper bar is flaking off, the front bumper bar is starting to head that way (see photos)
2) there is a small area of rust on the front lower valance leading edge (pointed out by "allendennikki")
3) the rear arches are slightly rusty (pointed out by "allendennikki") (see photo)
4) the bottom inside edge of both rear doors are slightly rusty (pointed out by "allendennikki")
5) there is a small rust blister on the rear offside passenger door
6) the vinyl trim on the rear quarter panels needs replacing (the metal behind the vinyl is solid) (see photo)
7) the nearside steering rack gaiter has a split and should be replaced soon
8) the water temperature guage hardly moves above cold, although the engine does get up to and maintain 88C (above which the electric fan cuts in) - I suspect that the water temperature sender is faulty, but I can't find a replacement sender that fits into the housing, but it could be the temperature guage in the instrument panel that is under-reading
9) there is small area on driver's seat squab where the stitching is starting to come undone (see photo)
10) there is a slight blow from the exhaust manifold to downpipe joint (it was like that when we bought the car and hasn't got any worse / better).

The car has power steering (as standard) and a Powerspark electronic ignition module (which helps ensure that it starts first time every time, with the original distributor points still in the car, in case the electronic module should ever fail), but no other mod-cons (so no air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, heated seats, ABS, traction control, ECU, fuel injection, etc. - all things that can and will fail on a modern car).

Two new tyres were fitted to the rear less than 500 miles ago. The front tyres are now showing signs of perishing / cracking, so will need to be replaced soon. The spare tyre is in good condition. The car also has a relatively new water pump, (mechanical) fuel pump, front brake pads, a rebuilt windscreen wiper motor and a recent service (oil, oil filter, spark plugs, plug leads).

The car has never had a radio or door speakers fitted (and I prefer to listen to the turbine-like whine of the straight six engine and gearbox instead), so there is only a blanking panel in the dashboard where the radio can be fitted (although, strangely, there is an electric radio aerial fitted to the offside rear wing).
The "Princess" badges that should be fitted to each rear quarter panel are stored in the glovebox, and there are two sets of keys for the car (we were only given one set when we bought the Princess, which I then misplaced, so couldn't use the car for 8 months until I found them, and so I immediately had a spare set of keys cut).

There are some spare parts included in the sale (see photo) ....
1) a Unipart GTT 216 towbar with ball hitch, rubber cover and 7 pin electrics plus fitting instructions
2) new set of front EBC Ultimax 2 DP243 brake pads
3) new Mann W172 oil filter
4) new nearside front headlamp assembly
5) new anti-roll bar mounts
6) new AMK TSB38 CV joint driveshaft gaiter
7) new camshaft chain kit

The mileage will increase from 80,110 by about 175 miles, because I am now enjoying using it as my daily driver (until the end of March).

The car is located in Colden Common (SO21 1SB, half way between Winchester and Southampton, Hampshire), and you are welcome to visit to view the Princess BEFORE making any offers. The first person to offer and pay £4,500 will secure the Princess, although lower offers will be considered if the £4,500 is not reached.
