• DISCUSSION: Stunning, intricate, hand-made collector paperweight designed, executed, and signed by master glass artist, Stuart Abelman (see, About the Artist, below). It's a special piece, one of the most complex, elaborate Abelman weights we've seen yet! My photos don't come close to doing this work justice. I am showing various angles and lighting temperatures. It has a rare triple-layered decoration, with intricate lustrous aurene patterns it is amazingly fine and detailed, composed of thin, bright, glittering strands of gold, bordered on both sides in lovely light-blue aurene bands. All that layered onto a red, pulled-patterned mid-layer background, making it visually deep and intriguing. The "four-leaf" design is bordered in white, while the red area is accented with complimentary blue and gold aurene. Overall, the piece has an understated iridescent finish, amazing depth and visual delight. Displayed under different lighting conditions, that may vary in color-temperature, direction, and intensity will allow you to enjoy this piece as it exhibits shifting visual treats!

Pontil area (base) was ground-flat, highly polished with his signature, "Abelman", codes "1/99-195", and dated "1987". The 'shelf-wear' one would expect to find on a weight of this age (36 years) is very light. Excellent addition to your any art glass collection, or a very thoughtful gift!

Note: None of these decorative embellishments are painted on the glass, they're chemically bonded as an integral ingredient while the piece was at one of its high-temperature production stages, becoming embedded into, or part of, the glass. (see, Aurene, below)

FULL CONDITION REPORT: We thoroughly inspected this piece and found that no cracks, flakes, hairlines, repairs, stains, residue, evidence of grinding or signs of restoration could be seen or felt. I found a couple of tiny handling marks, in the lower hemisphere–off the design area. Any natural, original indentations, bubbles, tool marks, carbon/ash deposits, or other natural textural features are  normal with hand-worked hot glass. Stuart Abelman's artistic ability was recognized at an early age, giving him the opportunity to study sculpture and painting as a young man. By seventeen he had quite an impressive portfolio. He was accepted to Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Then achieved a Master of Fine Arts degree at U.C.L.A. in 1976 and ran their new glass art school. By that time he had already created a body of work which quickly found its way into art shows and galleries. In 1977 Stuart left teaching and started Abelman Art Glass, in Southern California. As such, Stuart was one of a select group of pioneering studio glass artists to help found a new art glass studio movement in the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To this day, the movement has not slowed, is very popular, and elevates American glass artistry to be generally recognized as world-class.
Stuart uses his own formulas and the finest silica sand to ensure the purest quality glass possible. Each piece is made entirely of hot molten glass and is worked and completed at the furnace. All the colors and design patterns are formed from the hot glass. No paint is used. Many of the beautiful colors are made with gold, silver, and other precious metals.

Abelman’s works are shown in galleries and museums around the world and have also become permanent additions to museums, private and celebrity collections here and overseas. His piece in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum is particularly notable for his infusion of life into a figurative sculpture in glass.  He was once heard to say, "I have been working with hot glass for over thirty-five years and I am certain it runs through my veins."
