Unique Ordnance Survey of England One Inch Popular Map of Taunton, combining sheets 120 and 129. Edition: Popular Tourist  Publication Date:1919 with periodical corrected reprints.

Cloth mounted map

Combined Popular Edition sheets which have been joined together by end users appear from time to time but in the vendor's experience this combined sheet is unique in that it has been done professionally, using a single sheet of cloth backing and with an almost invisible join on the face of the paper maps. The covers too are unique but have the royal crest on the front and the cipher of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on the back.  Also printed on the front cover is the name of the retailer, Barnicott & Pearce of Taunton. Did they produce the map with the authority of the Ministry, or did they commision the map, with covers, from the OS? The two sheets meet west to east on a line through the town of Taunton itself but both appear to have been standard sheets and give no clues.

The oversized sheet has put extra wear on the folds, which are mostly not worn but do have some pinholes where they meet. Otherwise the cloth backing is clean, bright and strong, as is the face of the map. There are some handling marks in the  left and right margins.  The front cover is a little tired and missing a corner but otherwise is all legible.

Although when packed it will weigh under 200 grams, because of its thickness it would need to be sent as a Small Parcel when folded. Instead it will be posted in a card envelope partially unfolded so that it qualifies as a Large Letter.

Edition/Print code: 835 (on sheet 129)
