Unique Ordnance Survey of England One Inch Provisional Popular Map of York District.  Edition: Provisional Popular.  Publication Date:1919.  Revised in 1904-11.

Cloth mounted map

This map has what appears to be a standard early Popular Edition Ellis Martin cover, apart from the lack of a sheet number, but it hides in fact a truly unique sheet, being the only "Provisional Popular" sheet ever published. As such, it is a transition between the coloured Third Edition Large Sheet maps and the early Popular maps, which is most notable in the depiction of railways and of streets in the urban area. No other maps were produced in quite this style and it was not reprinted.

It is centred on York and covers an area from Boroughbridge in the north west to Selby in the south and Pocklington to the east.

The original owner has drawn neat purple rings around all the windmills they could find but this has not detracted from the interest of the map.  It is used with some pinholes at the intersections but the cloth backing is clean and sound.  In summary, a very good used copy of this unique and interesting map, not to be missed.
