THE ARTIST

The Italian/French artist Henri Miloch was born in Trieste on July the 15th 1898, the eldest of 10 children. And an extraordinary multi-talented man by all accounts!

He was obviously very talented at drawing and painting from very young, but he was very talented at lots of other things too. He didn't just like to paint boats, but he built them as well. At the age of only 14 he rowed from Trieste to Piran in a boat of his own construction. And he was a violinist with the Trieste symphony orchestra as well!

During the First World War (1914-18), at an incredibly young age, he was made a Captain, fighting on the Russian Front. And he went home from there speaking 5 languages! After the war he then studied engineering at the Aero-Naval School of Genoa.

He turned back to painting, though, and enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1930.  And it was there that he met his wife, Suzanne Poirier, and thence stayed in France. They loved the beautiful walled city of Concarneau in Brittany, and he lived and painted and exhibited there during the summer months from Ville Close, Place Saint-Guénolé in Concarneau. During the winter, they stayed in Paris, before moving to Tours in 1959, where the artist set up a studio in the old town there, at 61 Rue Colbert.

In keeping with his earlier maritime interest in boats and engineering, Henri Miloch is well known for his paintings of  boats too, from fishing boats to ships of the line including sailors and Breton fishermen. He was also wonderful at painting landscapes and townscapes etc in all media, watercolours, gouache and in oils. He was also an etcher and made models.

He died in Auray in Brittany on July the 4th 1979, at the age of 80.
