Description

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a versatile design genius and is considered a leading figure of modern Finnish craftsmanship. His contribution to design includes everything from glass, furniture, sculpture, jewelry, cutlery, urban planning, art, to the design of banknotes and graphics. During his incredibly productive career, he received numerous awards, including three gold medals from the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, the Pro Finland Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. As early as 1946, Wirkkala won his first design prize in a competition sponsored by the Iittala company, which led to a lifelong relationship between him and Iittala and had a positive influence on Wirkkala's future career. As Iittala's artistic director, he helped Iittala gain global recognition and created over 400 glass objects. In addition to his collaboration with Iittala, Wirkkala had a close collaboration with Kultakeskus Oy, one of the largest silver finish manufacturers. His designs for the Rosental company in Germany are also world-famous.

Tapio Wirkkala is one of the most productive designers of the 20th century.
