The Key has held the prisoners of Arkham Asylum imprisoned in their cells for at least two days, starving. He tells Batman about his new theory of universal oneness after he freed himself from the mental prison Martian Manhunter placed him inside and injects him with his "keymen," which unlocks Batman's instincts and rage, and Azrael and Batgirl have to stop him from killing the Key.
Batgirl follows Batman on patrol while Azrael takes the Key inside the asylum for medical treatment. He brutalizes a drug dealer and throws him off a building, and Batgirl catches him.
The Key wakes up in the asylum, guarded by Robin. Robin realizes what the Key did to Batman, and the Key frees himself and drugs Robin to paralyze him as protection against Batman when he returns. He says he is doing this because there is fame in being one of Batman's enemies and he wants to impress him.
Azrael follows Batman's trail of destruction back to Arkham, where a doctor reasons with Batman about the sanctity of life. This reminds Batman of his father Thomas Wayne's beliefs, and he snaps out of it and injects himself, then Robin, with the antidote. The Key is undeterred and says he will escape from underneath Batman's nose, but Batman says escaping will not impress him because he does it all the time. Instead the Key allows himself to be imprisoned and lectures his guards on how best to be contained so he can be the only person who can hold the Key.
