INFORMATION:

The Gold Star Lapel Button was designed and created by an Act of Congress on August 1, 1947 for family members of those who died in combat. It is a gold star on a field of purple surrounded by laurel leaves. The reverse is engraved “ACT OF CONGRESS - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1, AUGUST 1947”. Gold Star Lapel Buttons are awarded to surviving family members of service members who have been killed in action. Issued examples are engraved with the next of kins initials engraved on the reverse. The following family members were eligible: Widow, Widower, Mother, Father, Stepmother/father, Mother/father through adoption, Foster mother/father in loco parentis, Son, Daughter, Stepson/daughter, Son/daughter by adoption, Brother, Sister, Half brother/sister.
