Sonic and the Black Knight is a video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega as part of the Sonic The Hedgehog series. The game was released on Wii as the second entry in the Sonic Storybook series, following Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007).

Set in the world of King Arthur, the game combines Sonic's trademark speed with a new sword fighting system, utilizing of the Wii Remote's motion-sensing functionality. The series villain Doctor Eggman is absent, making this the first Sonic game that he does not appear in.

A wizard named Merlina, granddaughter of the original Merlin, summons Sonic the Hedgehog into the world of King Arthur. She explains that the King has been corrupted by the immortality granted by the scabbard of Excalibur, becoming a tyrannical ruler, and that Sonic must defeat him to restore peace to the kingdom. However, Sonic's speed alone will not be enough to defeat King Arthur, so he must take up the talking sword Caliburn in order to be able to put up a fight against the King.

Caliburn tells Sonic to seek information from the Lady of the Lake, Nimue (this world's version of Amy Rose), who tells him that he must collect the sacred swords wielded by the Knights of the Round Table (this world's versions of Shadow, Knuckles and Blaze) in order to dispel the immortality granted by Excalibur's scabbard. Battling King Arthur's knights of the underworld, the Knights of the Round Table, and a dragon along the way, Sonic claims all three swords and faces off with the King in a climactic showdown. The blue blur emerges victorious, but it's then revealed that King Arthur was only an illusion created by Merlin, and that Merlina was manipulating Sonic in order to claim Excalibur's scabbard as her own and use its power to make the kingdom changeless and eternal. She summons the underworld directly into the kingdom, creating the Dark Hollow.

Nimue reveals that the sacred swords are able to form a barrier to prevent the Dark Hollow's spread, so Sonic and the Knights split up and journey to the kingdom's corners. However, the barrier proves to be too weak. Sonic enters the Dark Hollow himself to challenge Merlina, but she proves too powerful for him to fight the first time around, not only badly beating up Sonic but destroying Caliburn in the process. But Sonic never gives up, and with a little help from the Knights, Sonic's resolve restores Caliburn – now revealed to be the true Excalibur – and Sonic transforms into an armored super form called Excalibur Sonic. He manages to defeat Merlina, destroying the Dark Hollow. After the battle, Sonic tells Merlina that, while it's sad that all worlds end, everyone should live their lives to the fullest until that day comes.

Now that King Arthur has been revealed as an illusion, the Knights of the Round Table are about to disband, but Caliburn reminds them that he is the one who chooses the true king, now revealed to be Sonic. In a post-credits cutscene, Sonic (now back in his world) tells Amy about his adventures, but she perceives the story as a ludicrous excuse for forgetting their planned date. The game ends in a similar manner to Sonic and the Secret Rings, with the title of the book King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table changing to Sonic and the Black Knight.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set to star in his first feature film, which will be produced by Sony Pictures and combine live-action with animation. In a statement, Sega chief executive, Hajime Saito, confirmed the movie is set for release in 2018.

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic The Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018," he said, speaking to The World Folio.

"Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."

Sega is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its blue speedster this year and, as part of this, is expected to make a number of announcements over the coming months.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an upcoming adventure film based on the video game franchise Sonic the Hedgehog published by Sega. It is the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), with Jeff Fowler directing from a script written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on the story created by Casey and Miller. The cast includes Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and Jim Carrey. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 follows Sonic and Tails as they try to prevent Doctor Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna from finding the Master Emerald.

Following the success of the first film, and with plans for a film series, Paramount Pictures announced the sequel in May 2020. Filming took place from March to June 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group.

In February 2022, Sega and Paramount confirmed that a third film, alongside a Knuckles spin-off series, are in development. The Knuckles spin-off would feature Elba reprising his role, releasing in 2023 on Paramount's streaming service, Paramount+.
