DESCRIPTION:  This set was skillfully hand painted by the artist.  The design includes pink roses and blue daisy like flowers with green leaves formed into a garland encircling the pieces.    The overall quality of the design is quite professional.  The gold trim on the rims & handles is very rich looking and accents the smooth rims while the finial of the lid is also painted in solid gold paint.  The outside of the dishes has the luster while the inside is the high white of the porcelain.  The garlands are hand painted on the luster.

HISTORY/MARKS:  Maximilian Marx and Oscar Gutherz established a porcelain decorating factory along the Rohlau Creek in Altrohlau around 1884.  Interestingly, the business was financed by Lazarus Straus ( of LS&S, Lazaras Straus & Sons, New York Importer) who was Oscar’s father-in-law.  The firm initially decorated porcelain from other factories, but later produced their own porcelain.  In 1898 Oscar’s brother, Edgar, purchased Marx’s share of the business.  The business continued to expand and in 1918 became part of OEPIAG towards the end of WWI.  The mark on this set was in use from 1899-1918 and is mark #558 in Robert E. Rontgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain.
