This vintage, 1973, Cox Command Jeep is a rare and coveted addition to any RC and Tether car enthusiast’s collection. This Jeep is in its original box and is complete with all original parts in near-mint condition. The engine is all-original aside from the backplate, which I bought new. There’s also some extras included.

I’ve included detailed information below organized into 4 sections: The Jeep, The Engine, The Box and Extras—all of which are intended to be as clear and forthright with my buyer as possible as to the condition of all items bundled in this sale. Please read carefully and I’ll be happy to answer any questions. Thanks!

THE JEEP:

The Command Jeep is complete with all-original parts in near-mint condition for vintage age, play and shelf wear. Includes all accessories: the axe, spade, axe/spade body mount, antenna, rear spare fuel tank, rear spare tire, windshield, steering wheel, shifters, seats. No cracks, or significant wear to interior, seats, or back and side rails. All tires are in near-mint condition with no dry rot, no tears —including for the rear-mounted spare and rim. No broken pieces on the chassis with all axles and rotors in place. Headlights, rear and front bumpers in mostly near-mint condition. Be advised, vintage plastic will have some leaching of oil over time and there may be subtle light scratches, or blemishes in some areas. The chassis appears to have the only significant amount of plastic oil leaching and some splotchy wear. While included, the Jeep Gas Tank is in poor shape, with significant wear, scratches, oil leaching and both top gas hose joints broken off. New Gas tanks and hoses are still made and available for purchase on eBay and look to be available from the Cox Factory (shipping from Canada.) Most of the decals appear to have been applied to the jeep, however I do have the original decal sheet (pictured). The sheet has some portions cut away and has some significant staining and wear. Can’t guarantee they’ll work, yet it’s a nice collector add-on. All applied decals but the one on the passenger side hood (pictured slight peel to corners) appear to be clear, in very good condition and not peeling away.

THE ENGINE:

The .49 Engine is clean and in very good condition for original vintage age and shelf wear. It has not been started and this sale states that I cannot guarantee it will start. I can say it turns fluidly and does appear to have compression. There is no significant chips, cracks, or scratches. There is some oxidation to the metal portions (see photos).

In addition to a brand-new engine backplate recently purchased from the Cox Factory in Canada, this sale includes an extra Cox engine backplate, which does not fit the Command Jeep chassis. According to the original owner I acquired all this from, the engine, nor vehicle has ever been run as it came from the Cox factory with the wrong backplate assembly. We think they mistakenly attached the Dune Buggy backplate assembly (pictured loose—the more rounded bodied one). I am including this mystery backplate assembly in the sale. I temporarily installed the new and correct Cox Command Jeep backplate assembly just snug enough to facilitate photos, yet have removed and repacked it separately to maintain the integrity of the new part, new gasket and new bolts. The original engine cover appears to have a small chip and will need the missing attachment bolt (see photo), yet appears that it will still function.

THE BOX:

The original box from 1973 includes the original manual, yellow inner-display mount (one side flap torn). The white background paper is in surprisingly good condition as it was stored separately (according to original owner). The box has been painstakingly refurbished and mended with reinforcements for structural integrity. Including a full-cleaning, reglue and some structural reinforcement of inside flap seams and corners in order for preventing further damage from what were loose flaps sagging, and wrinkles and tears starting along the inside box corners. The box is in overall good/fair condition as you can plainly see with various rips, flap wear, fading, water damage, chemical damage, and a long significant cut running the entire left front side. Inside is the original day-glo yellow insert for mounting the Jeep. It’s missing the large black twister tie with day glo yellow cardboard flap which secures the Jeep to the yellow insert. The insert is in good condition, again with some chemical damage, stains and a torn-off corner of the left inner wall flap. The display window is mostly clean, clear and intact minus a few small holes, slight wavy wrinkles and light scratches. The Original “read before starting” sticker that was applied to the jeep new is there—it’s been reapplied to the inner yellow box, yet it’s there (pictured).

EXTRAS:

Also included is the original Cox Four-Forty Race Car Kit box in Very Good Condition with the original Cox battery (which appears to no longer be functioning) with outer battery packaging box in fair condition, with significant chemical damage, stains and some gouges and flap tears. The kit is missing the glow head clip with battery wires, filler hose, 1/2 pint metal fuel container and Cox wrenches. Most of which can be purchased new online. Includes the original Cox Kit red fuel funnel, which has a single surface melt mark on one outer side, but should be fully functional.
