Exquisite Decorative ERDMANN SCHLEGELMILCH Hand Painted 8 3/8" PLATE, White ROSES w/Green LEAVES, circa 1891-1938 from Suhl, Thuringa, Germany
DESCRIPTION: This features a beautiful bouquet of large white roses with yellow centers. The background wash is ivory with orange & grey highlights. There are green leaves and grey ghost leaves to add depth to the painting. The 3/4" green band around the rim is most unusual in that it has darker green wavy lines flowing through it like ripples on a lake. The rim is trimmed in gold and a gold scroll work separates the green band from the painting. This is very artistically decorated by a talented painter at at the ES Prussia studio. See the photos.
CONDITION: The condition of this decorative plate is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There is no rubbing to the gold. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is.
DIMENSIONS: The elegant plate has a diameter of 8 3/8" and a height of 7/8".
HISTORY/MARKS: Leonard Schlegelmilch founded his porcelain factory in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany in 1861 and named it after his father, Erdmann. His factory was later run by Oscar, Julius Martin and Carl. Oscar & Carl eventually opened their own independent factories and Julius Martin took over the Erdmann factory after his father’s (Leonard’s) death in 1899. He continued business and slowly expanded until they reached their peak employment count of 360 people in 1913. The business operated successfully until it declined due to the world financial crisis of the 1930’s and fully closed by 1937. Continuous production really ceased between 1933 & 1935. The red mark on the back of this plate is the Erdmann Schlegelmilch Suhl, Thuringa, Germany mark as cited from porcelainmarksandmore (PM&M) as mark #1-15 used in the 1891-1938 time period.
