Brass and copper Ganga Jamuna Tanjore lota, fine quality with a central band of copper, engraved with multiple bands of decoration in the brass and a single parrot in the copper. Tactile, superb craftsmanship, a beautiful artifact from the late 18th/early 19th century.

This combination of both brass and copper metalwork is is dubbed 'Ganga-Jamuna' in reference to the contrasting colours of the water of the Ganges and Jamuna rivers.

These ornate vases with wide necks and high shoulder profiles were made to lustrate large idols in Indian religious ceremonies.. Their shapes are similar to the big brass water pots which are still seen in rural India today.
