Very rarely offered for sale, is this magnificent King George V and Queen Mary 1911 Coronation Plate by Paragon Fine China.

Extremely scarce, being Paragon’s first and earliest Coronation Plate, it was the forerunner of commemorative plates for King George V’s Silver Jubilee, and the Coronations of King Edward VIII, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.

This 10½ inch diameter plate is profusely hand decorated with colourful enamels and gold gilt, it has a 1¾ inch wide shaped gold gilt edge border consisting of bunches of fruit, signifying prosperity and abundance, set under the glaze, over which is the inscription “KING GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY" with each word separated by red Tudor Roses. At the base of the border is the inscription “Crowned in Westminster Abbey June 22^nd 1911”.

The gold gilt edged circular central decoration consists of a King’s Crown above a pair of oval cartouches bearing the Royal Monograms of King George V ‘GV’ and Queen Mary ‘M’, which are surrounded by roses, thistles and shamrocks representing the National Flora of the United Kingdom of England, Scotland and Ireland. Beneath the cartouches is a banner inscription “HM.King.George. HM.Queen.Mary.” The background of the central panel is a profusion of pale blue and rose pink floral decorations.

The plate’s backstamp has the Royal Coat of Arms of Queen Mary and the text “By Appointment” indicating that ‘Paragon’ were the official suppliers of Fine China to Queen Mary.
