Back many years ago, actual money was used for slot machines.  Money is very dirty and this dirt rubs off on your hands which was distasteful to many gamblers, especially females.  They would sometimes use a slot/gambling glove to protect their slot hand from the dirt and oils found on coinage and metal tokens.
