Four Years in Upper Burma, by W. R. Winston, 1892

Four Years in Upper Burma.  Winston, W. R.  London: C. H. Kelly, 1892.  Early account of time spent in Mandalay in upper Burma -- the journey, the people, colonial rule and British influence, liquor and opium issues, monasteries, missions, the author's first home intoxicants and opium issue, mountain tribes, the author's home, Burmese women, the Chin tribe, lepers and more.  The author, C. H. Kelly, went there with a goal of setting up a mission.  The narrative is fascinating -- and the illustrations (both photographic and sketches) are also fascinating. Twenty-nine images including a frontispiece showing Buddhist shrines, plus a very nice foldout color map.  Hardcover, with gilt illustration of a pagoda on the front, 266 pages.  Firmly bound, no writing inside, but the inside front and back covers are marred where there used to be cellophane tape.  A bit of wear top and bottom of spine and corners. A very compelling account.
