Prima del 1968 nel tennis c'erano due circuiti di tornei: uno dilettantistico costituito dai tornei ufficiali e uno professionistico fatto di esibizioni. Poiché ai professionisti era vietato partecipare ai tornei dei dilettanti venne a crearsi una situazione paradossale: i giocatori più forti passavano al professionismo e disertavano i tornei ufficiali, tra cui i prestigiosi tornei del Grande Slam. Una situazione che si risolverà solo nel 1968, quando tutto il tennis diverrà professionistico. Quel che è avvenuto da allora in poi è l'oggetto di questo libro.
