Veterinarian medical tool antique iron horse speculum. Massive, heavy forged instrument was put in a horses mouth as a brace to hold the mouth open so the horse could not bite while the veterinarian worked on teeth or administered medicines. Vets were at risk from bites when examining teeth or other medical needs while working on the mouth. This instrument was made to be used with a wooden handle, if needed, attached to the bar at the end and the other end could be attached to halter or bridle. The words DR. EDWARDS SPECULUM are on the bar at top. Measures 13" long x 6" wide and weighs 1 pound. Great to add to your collection of farm antiques. It is in very good condition with some surface rust and pitting.
