Limoges LDB&Co Flambeau Charger Plate 11.5" Bird Hand Painted Leonce 1890s-1900s
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted plate was decorated by the talented artist, Gustave Leonce, as signed on the front of the plate. The color palette used is brown, grey, blue, yellow, and orange on white w/gold. This is such a realistic painting of the birds, one walking and one in flight, and was obviously meant to be displayed as a cabinet plate or wall hanging. There are 4 holes drilled in the foot of the back and a previous owner inserted a wire for hanging. We left this as it is secure, but it could easily be removed to display as a cabinet charger.
CONDITION: While this charger is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects and only very minor age appropriate wear on the heavy gold on the scalloped and embossed rim. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. It is clean & white on the back. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: This charger has a diameter of 11 1/2" with a height of 1 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: The period of operation for this Flambeau China porcelain white ware manufacturer and decorating workshop in Limoges, France was 1896-1916. L.D.B. & Co. was apparently a New York importing company with ties to both Limoges, France and Bavaria. Most Flambeau China marks carry the L.D. B. & Co. initials as part of the mark. The quality of painting by Flambeau was quite high and many of the famous Limoges artists’ signatures such as Rene’, Dubois, Luc, Levy or Andre’ can be found on their wares. No examples have been found decorated by American artists (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition). The red underglaze white ware mark on this charger is that of Flambeau China (L.D.B. & Co.) which is Gaston's mark #4 used in the 1890's-1900's time period.
