Nippon M-in-Wreath Mayonnaise Bowl w/Saucer Hand Painted Floral w/Gold 1911-1918
NIPPON Exquisite Decorative MAYONNAISE SAUCE BOWL w/UNDERPLATE, M-in-Wreath mark, BLUE & PINK FLOWERS & GREEN & YELLOW LEAVES on WHITE, GOLD Trim & Small GOLD BEADING, from Moraimura Bros. in Noritake, Japan, circa 1911-1918
DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted sauce bowl was produced using an pink, blue, green, yellow & brown with gold on white color palette. The gold is used on the rim's trim and on the 3 cannonball feet. The gold also forms tiny gold beads just on the inside of the rim. There is a cream band on the inside next to the rim which has green squares on it. The centers to these appears to be unevenly worn. The underplate does not have these squares; but is, otherwise, painted to match the bowl. This is most elaborate.
CONDITION: While this sauce bowl set is classified as used, the condition is superb. The only issue is the green paint on the squares previously mentioned. We find it remarkable that the gold shows no age appropriate wear. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, other rubbings, scratches or hairlines. See the photos.
DIMENSIONS: The sauce bowl has a height of 2 5/16" with a diameter of 5 1/8". The capacity of the bowl is 15 ounces. The underplate has a diameter of 6 1/4" with a height of 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this set is the green M-in-Wreath Mark. The M-in-Wreath Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the M-in-Wreath’s mark #47 to since 1911. This seems to narrow the window of use for the M-in-Wreath mark to 1911-1918.
