Elisha Kirkall ( circa 1682-1742)

A pair, (two - 2) Framed and Glazed early 18th Century Coloured Engravings

Depicting two Roman artefacts on Barham Downs Kent - after drawings by Wiliam Stukeley (1687-1765)

These two prints, which I assume have both been hand coloured, are well documented. In fact two separate non coloured unframed impressions are currently for sale on Ebay

The top print is titled along the top margin: 53 2nd Caesars camp upon Barham Downs drawn on 10 Oct 1722 and shows lower margin Kirkall as the engraver and Stukeley as the artist.

The lower print on the top reads: 55 2d View from a Roman Tumulus upon the Watling Street by the Mill on Barham Downs 10 Oct 1722 and again shows Kirkall as engraver and Stukeley as the artist.

Both mounted with an off white mounting board with a gilt edge round the aperture, which measures 18.5cm x 28.5cm. The prints show a distinctive pale mark of  17.5cm x 27.5cm . Housed in gilt wooden frames both measuring 35cm x 43cm x 2.5cm.

Condition on both good. Seen through glass Caesars Camp completely are of any foxing tears damage or creasing. Roman Tumulus same bar several small areas of tonal colouring. No more nor less than you would expect from an engraving of this age. Frames good bar some tonal changes and minor scuffs. Mounts good.

My photos are taken in natural daylight. I do not digitally enhance the images. I try to ensure what you see isa what you get. There is some reflection from some of the photos from the glass. As glazed regret no overseas mailing.
